The first can be read in a normal fashion. Traveler tries to talk Horacio out of doing what he, for his part, insists he doesn’t intend to do, though at the conclusion of this part of the book, he suddenly muses that maybe he does mean to do such a thing after all, that maybe it is for the best, and the end of the passage is wholly open to this interpretation.

It had been some time now that Oliveira had been paying attention to unimportant things, and the little green gourd had the advantage that as he meditated upon it, it never occurred to his perfidious intelligence to endow it with such ideas as one extracts from mountains, the moon, the horizon, an adolescent girl, a bird, or a horse. Finally, I have developed a love of mate while reading this book.
Starting somewhere in the middle of the text, the reading path returns immediately to chapter one, then to two, then jumps dramatically tobefore returning to safe haven hoscotch three. And in the worst of cases, if they do make a mistake, it might just turn out perfect. I bought the book brand new, this is my first time reading it, so I am frustrated. Hopefully no spoilers but this book really cannot be spoiled.
InGregory Rabassa won the first National Book Award to recognize the work of a translator, for his English-language edition of Hopscotch. Horacio, meanwhile, observing the relationship between Traveler and Talita, who more and more reminds him of La Maga, endeavors to enter more intimately dortazar their lives, but he is unable to do so.
